ALL SAFE AND SOUND

365 DAYS OF THANKSLIVING — DAY 85

ALL SAFE AND SOUND

Some days, we just need to thank the good Lord above for uneventful days: work-wise, weather-wise, health-wise… all-things-wise, right? Here, today, at least for me in SW Minnesota, things were fairly calm. I’ll take one of those “meh” kind of days any ole time. That said, I was a bit concerned about our daughter and her family.

Last night, we chatted with our kiddo and her husband. They’re stationed in Newport, Rhode Island, and the weather forecast (yesterday) was calling for a doozy of a storm. The local authorities were advising everyone to prepare and hunker down.

Roads were being closed. Businesses were shuttering, and all military—except essential personnel—were ordered to stay home until the storm passed. The prediction: at least a foot of snow, along with hurricane-strength winds.

Being diligent, they’d stocked up on all the usual things: bread, eggs, and milk; and did what they could to protect their property before hunkering down. They went to bed with calm skies, but when they awoke, they were in the thick of an avalanche of “white mud” falling from the skies, accompanied by typhoon-force winds.
Throughout the day, we checked in to see how they were doing. By this afternoon, the worst had passed, and they were starting to dig themselves out. While piles of snow had socked them in, thank goodness they were safe and sound. What a sigh of relief. In my head, I thanked the Lord that our daughter and her family, and millions of others, are safe and sound.

Throughout the day, I reflected on how easy it is to take for granted life’s non-events. But then, when I considered the Nor’easter that nailed the upper East Coast this morning, anybody can be one hour or heartbeat away from life flipping on a dime. There but for the grace of God go I, right?

I’m reminded tonight of the litanies often recited in church, one beginning with the ancient words, Kyrie eleison.

Lord, in your mercy, our lives are in your hands. Lord, in your mercy, keep us all safe. Lord, in your mercy, lead so we may follow. Lord, in your mercy, go before us all.
