CARDS, CALLS, AND CONNECTIONS

365 DAYS OF THANKSLIVING — DAY 95

CARDS, CALLS, AND CONNECTIONS

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but at 57, I think I’ve finally mastered the best trick of all: the art of the chill.

Today wasn’t about hustle or high-octane celebrations. It was about the three C’s that keep this pastor’s heart full: Cards, Calls, and Connections. From the ping of a Facebook notification, to the handwritten ink on a card, and the sound of a familiar voice on the phone, I’ve been reminded all day that while I might be getting older, I’m certainly not doing it alone.

While my wife was busy being working from home, I took a deliberate, solo pilgrimage an hour down the road to one of our favorite spots—Schmidt’s Meat Market. There’s something therapeutic about hitting the road alone, listening to some familiar “classic” tunes, and stocking up on $125 of bacon and other smoked meat that, no pun intended, smokes the competition.

The highlight of the “Connections” today wasn’t just digital; it was the connection to my roots. I decided the best gift I could give myself was a taste of home. I spent the afternoon channeling my inner chef to recreate my mom’s beef stroganoff. It’s savory, it’s creamy, and it’s the kind of meal that makes 57 feel like the new 27—or at least a very well-rested 47. No shortcuts, no rush—just an old geezer (as my dad called me) enjoying the process.

As I sit here “chilling, “I’m struck by the beauty of connection. In a world that’s always moving too fast, thank you for taking a moment to stop and share a piece of your day with me. Whether we served together in the Navy, went to Irondale, or you’re part of my wonderful church family (across the globe), your connection is a gift I don’t take for granted.

Today, I’m thankful for you being a part of my life, and for 57 years on planet earth! May God bless you and keep you today and all the days to come.
