Today, too many of us like feed our bodies with foods — that while super tasty — aren’t very good for us; and in time, those things make us unhealthy. We gain weight and our bodies become backed-up with toxins. The same is true with our souls. Too many of us today give consume media and the things of this world that aren’t healthy for our hearts. And just as we sometimes need to detox our bodies from all the sludge, so too we need to detox our souls. The truth of the matter is this: Detoxing Your Soul— It’s the Heart-Healthy Thing To Do.
Our message today comes from the Gospel According to Mark, Chapter 7. Back in Jesus’ day, the Pharisees were asked Jesus why disciples hadn’t washed their hands before eating. They were worried that they were “defiled” because their hands were… unclean. Jesus needed them to know that it’s not what one puts in their stomachs that defile them, but we’re defiled by the evil thoughts, words, and actions that come from our hearts, things such as sexual immorality, adultery, theft, and more. All these things build up in our hearts like a spiritual sludge, and in time, they can cause problems (like a spiritual heart attack).
And just as our bodies need to be rid of toxins to keep us healthy, so do our souls (our hearts). Unfortunately, we can’t do that on our own. But Jesus can. In the end, Jesus would’ve wanted them, and you, to know that the only way to detoxify our souls is through Him — through his sacrifice on the cross, through his blood that cleanses us from all unrighteousness.
