MR. FREEZE MISER

365 DAYS OF THANKSLIVING — DAY 54

Mr Freeze Miser

If you’re anywhere above the 38° parallel in North America today, you’re probably feeling the effects of the cold. For us Minnesotans, the frigidity is nothing new. While we don’t like subzero temps, we’re hearty enough to say, “Meh, oh well.

Despite the temps this morning being 15 below (and the real temp feeling much colder), our kids in Comfrey still had school. Minnesotans we gotta it all figured out; a few more layers and we’ll still go out. Listen close enough and you’ll hear us say, “Fifteen below ambient, no problem. Let’s go grab a burger and beer; Mr. Freeze Miser ain’t gonna shut us out.” (That was me this afternoon, except for the beer part).

I know this is gonna sound nuts, but I’m kinda thankful for the cold, even this frigid cold. Here’s why. Because when it’s this cold, then we’re that much closer to it warming up. But even more than that, the abysmal temps should remind us to be thankful for those things in life that’s too easy to take for granted: our homes, good heating, ample food, and even the opportunity to slow down and stay close to home.

While Fridays are often “date nights” for my wife and I (which often means grabbing a bite and grocery shopping), staying home tonight is just as nice. And now, as I type, we’re on the phone with our daughter who literally lives near miles from the historic “38th Parallel” – a location halfway across the world. Had we not been for Mr. Freeze Miser sending us his Arctic blast, we might not have been home to talk with our girl – one more thing for which I’m grateful.

Heavenly Father, I know this might sound weird, but today I’m thanking you for the frigid cold. Because of these temps, we’re staying in and just slowing down. Be with all those tonight who don’t have shelter, heat, and food. Keep the homeless safe so they can know the extent of your love.
