OLD SCHOOL

365 DAYS OF THANKSLIVING — DAY 87

OLD SCHOOL
Earlier today, I saw a post from a friend talking about her kitchen cabinets. Like a lot of folks, she’s probably dreamed of doing a full-blown remodel. But since dropping a small fortune on a kitchen isn’t exactly a priority right now, she went a different route. She grabbed a bottle of Murphy’s Oil Soap and put in some elbow grease. Let me tell you, those cabinets looked terrific in the photos. It instantly reminded me of the cabinets my Grandma B had in her house. Now that’s old school.

My grandparents both passed within five years of my high school graduation. Times just seemed simpler back then—certainly less impatient, indifferent, and impetuous. That reality hit me square in the jaw today as our internet (of all our precious first-world lifelines) decided to go completely on the fritz. The running rumor around town is that somebody dug where they shouldn’t have (100 miles from here) and managed to take out the fiberoptic cables. Yay.
Since the crack of dawn, our connection to the outside world has been more miss than hit. Up, then down. Limping along at 1 to 5 Mbps down, then a bizarre 50 up. Then it just goes completely dark. Back up, back down. I’m not kidding, it’s been like flying through heavy airplane turbulence all day long. BARF.

It’s definitely made for an interesting day, forcing me to work the “old school” way. I mean, we weren’t exactly plunged into the Dark Ages, or even back to 1987. But tech-wise? It definitely felt like 1997 all over again. Cue the screeching dial-up modem sounds.

But you know what? That’s not necessarily a bad thing, is it? For one, it forces a masterclass in patience. More importantly, it provides a rare opportunity to just slow down and actually take in a bit of silence.

Perhaps this whole mess is a quirky little gift from the Lord—His way of saying, “Slow down tonight. Give your souls a break from all the digital noise. Sit in the quiet, play a game, and maybe even meditate on the sheer gift of life.”

So tonight, I’m doing exactly that… right after I hit “publish” on this post before the web dies on me again. This evening, I’m surprisingly thankful for the forced silence and a little digital rest. Thank You, Heavenly Father, for giving us the opportunity to just enjoy the quiet.
