THE MUNDANE

365 DAYS OF THANKSLIVING — DAY 51

the mundane

Today’s post might come across as boring. Sometimes the mundane in my opinion, is okay. Today was kind of one of those days. Don’t get me wrong; I was busy; I didn’t turn off my PC until sometime after 5. That said, nothing happened today that was like, “Woah! Dude, you gotta hear this….” Nah, not today. Today was just… ordinary and boring.

Now truthfully, if I wanted to be my usual sarcastic self, I would’ve written this exact post yesterday, and called it “Mundane Mondays.” That certainly would’ve had a nice title rhyme to it. And, generally speaking, Mondays are kinda mundane. But yesterday wasn’t ordinary; it was the furthest from it. Perhaps today was my “mundane Monday” – a redo if you will. (Can you tell I’m just blathering on?)

So what was so boring about today, you might ask? I duh-no. It’ shouldn’t have been, but it kinda was. I mean, truthfully, the third week of every month is my busiest week, beginning not on Monday, but on Tuesday with three back-to-back-to-back days of ministry stuff. I was out the door earlier today, dressed a bit more snazzy than normal, because today’s agenda included leading chapel at the nursing home.

It’s always a hoot leading chapel, because I never know what to expect. I mean, let’s be honest, some of the residents are quite up there in years. Keeping them awake and slightly entertained can be a chore (especially the Scandinavian ones). Then there’s the ones who SNORE, and those who talk aloud incessantly; and those who just don’t know where they are. But in all that, there’s joy.

Well, after chapel, and since I was there, I might as well get in a visit with Leroy; so that’s what I did. But then, the nurse came and grabbed him, saying, “Dinner time,” and that it was. Leroy went to the cafeteria, and I jolted to Subway and grab some sammies and headed home. Now, what’s more mundane than a mediocre hoagie—IDK! (Now, munching down on a platter of brisket nachos with homemade corn salsa, jalapeño peppers, and homemade queso from 6East — a local BBQ & café — that would’ve spiced up my day). But, then what would’ve I written about?

Okay, so I got home, we munched on our sammies, watched the news (boring), then my wife went back to work and I did the same (more boring). I had worshipping planning to do for the following week, and well… that too can be quite mundane.

Tomorrow will be the furthest from mundane; in fact, I’ll be so busy prepping to teach teenagers (please, come and save me), and then a council meeting. Tomorrow won’t be boring. Today though, it was just kinda of blah. But ya know what? I’m good with that.

Some days are just meant to be boring. And if you ask me, boring can be nice; because when the day is mundane and nothing unusual happened, then that can be a breath of fresh air.

Did you know the words “boring” and “mundane” aren’t found in the bible? But even Solomon wrote about the mundaneness that life can often bring. You may know these words well:

"Vanity of vanities! All is vanity. . . . A generation goes, and a generation comes. . . . The sun rises, and the sun goes down. . . . The wind blows to the south and goes around to the north; around and around goes the wind. . . . All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; . . . there they flow again. All things are full of weariness."

I think if Solomon word-smithing Ecclesiastes today, he might just tell us that it’s okay to embrace the mundane; because, even in the ordinary moments of life, we can still see God’s hand moving through it all and thank him for those “boring” days.

God, thank you for today’s lack of excitement, and it just being kind of mundane. Those boring days you give us help us catch our breath and help us to sit back and remember that every day and everything is a gift from you.
